BBC: Chelsea asks EFL to confirm that Jiwu can play in the League Cup

BBC reported that Chelsea striker Mark Giu can play in the League Cup due to changes in rules.

Due to changes in the rules of the League Cup this season, Chelsea forward Giou is eligible to play in the third round of the League Cup against Lincoln City on Tuesday. Chelsea didn't seem to be aware of the change in the rules before the game started, but they learned the news after seeking confirmation from the English Football League (EFL) a few hours before the game.

Although Jiwu is not expected to make a appearance in this game, if Chelsea advances, he will be considered for appearances in the next few rounds. The Spanish striker represented Sunderland in the event last month when he was on loan.

In the past few seasons, this means that Jiwu has not been able to play in the League Cup for Chelsea because he has already represented another team, the so-called "cup binding", where a player can only participate in a certain cup for one team within a season. However, newly introduced rules this season allow players to compete in the League Cup for two different clubs in the same season.

19-year-old Jiwu was recalled to Chelsea due to Drapp's injury. He made three appearances during his time at Sunderland, scoring a goal against Huddersfield in the second round of the League Cup in August. Chelsea's forward resources are currently in short supply, and Drapp is expected to return until December, while Nicholas Jackson is loaned to Bayern Munich, and Joao Pedro has started in all six games of the season.

Rules Description: New rules implemented this season allow players to participate in the League Cup for two different clubs under certain conditions. Specifically, if a player appears for the original club before the transfer window is closed and transfers to another club before the window is closed, he can compete for both clubs. In addition, the emergency goalkeeper loan also meets this condition.

After Chelsea confirmed with the EFL, the EFL confirmed that Jiwu meets these conditions, so he can play for both clubs in the League Cup.
